A Guide To The Hazard Perception Test

Once you’ve completed the multiple choice element of the theory test you will be offered a short break before the hazard perception test begins.

First of all there will be a short demonstration video and short tutorial explaining how to the hazard perception test operates and what is required of you in order to pass it.

The test includes 14 video clips that show a variety of different hazards from the view point of the driver. Each clip lasts roughly 1 minute in length, and you will be required to click the computer’s mouse button when you see a potential hazard developing into a moving hazard – a situation that would affect the course of your vehicle.

Every time you click the mouse button a red flag symbol will appear on the bottom of the screen. Up to five marks can be scored for each hazard displayed, with the more quickly you click, the more points you will score.

Important: Don’t try to beat the system by continuously clicking the button, the software will realise what you’re doing and will score you 0 for that clip.

As one of the 14 clips will offer you two developing hazards (with a possible score of 10 points), it is important that you watch each clip carefully and to the end.

In order to pass this part of the theory test you are required to score 44 out of a possible 75 marks.
